Chunky Crochet Sweater

I’m a tinkerer.  I like seeing how things are made.  I see something and think about how I could change it to make it mine.  Make it fit me.  That’s what I love about patterns.  I’m inspired by them.

I saw this Simply Constructed Pullover pattern from Lionbrand yarns and just knew I had to make it.  I liked how the sweater stitching was vertical with the collar crocheted into the body.  No shoulder seams either.  Of course, me being me, I couldn’t possibly make it as is!

I picked out new yarn and tinkered away at my new design.   I wasn’t too keen on the sleeve design so I dug through my sweaters at home to see how the sleeves were designed.  Most of them were created with vertical stitching.  So I created my own sleeves by stitching vertically just like the body of the sweater.  It took some trial and error, but I finally figured it out.

After I assembled the sweater, I was amazed.  It fit perfectly.  Oversized, but with slender sleeves that I thought were very flattering.  Because the sleeves were made with a ribbed stitch, it stretched around the bigger parts of my arms and even fit the smaller parts of my arms.  No need to create a complicated sleeve design.  I did have many test fittings to determine the sleeve and body size as I crocheted.  The great thing about this sweater was that I could size it as I crocheted.  The only part that was set from the start was the length.

I hope to post a tutorial on how I completed mine, but right now it’s very specific to my sizing and I’m not sure how that would apply to everyone else.  I’ll have to do some thinking and see what I come up with.

Overall, I’m SO HAPPY with how it turned out.  This was my first crocheted item of clothing and I’m thrilled that I love it and it actually fit me.  I’m addicted to making these.  So far I have three.  Somebody stop me!
